Co-teaching: Inclusion and increased student achievement

Co-teaching is effective in improving outcomes for children with disabilities, but only when it is implemented with fidelity say Marilyn Friend and Tammy Barron

CO-TEACHING OCCURS when special and general educators share classroom responsibilities so that students with disabilities can access the same curriculum while receiving specialist support. Although co-teaching has been an option for educating students with disabilities for more than 25 years in the US, it has recently grown in popularity, probably because professionals are increasingly recognizing that nearly all children can and should reach today’s rigorous academic standards.
