Embedded multimedia: Trailing edge technology cuts a new path

Bette Chambers explains how video segments embedded in lessons can effectively support teaching and learning  

WHEN I WAS AT SCHOOL, occasionally teachers showed us half-hour long educational films that were tangentially related to topics that we were covering in class. These were seen primarily as a break from our more mundane traditional lessons rather than an effective means of learning, and unfortunately video is still typically used only as a Friday afternoon reward or filler. This article describes an innovative application of technology in classroom teaching, where brief video segments are threaded throughout lessons to improve children’s learning.

What we know
● Educational television programs have been found to have positive effects, but this is incidental.
● The intentional use of video content to highlight key concepts during lessons shows great promise.
● Evaluations of embedded multimedia have shown it improves achievement in programs for beginning reading and struggling readers.
